What does “equal” education in Belize really look like?
These photographs show how education in Belize is shaped by both physical learning spaces and institutional regulation. The rules governing student behavior and appearance exist alongside classrooms marked by limited resources and infrastructure. Together, they reflect how historical and structural inequalities influence students’ access to meaningful educational opportunities.
Photo A below shows a pre-school level classroom that has been divided into two sections to “fit” two smaller classes. This limits students ability to meaningfully participate in their education.

Photo B shows “dressing guidelines” before entering a high-school campus. There are limitations for freedom of expression, individuality, and creativity.
